Donut Dreams

So this is what my life has come to. I’m now a donut ball vendor.

The idea originated with my friend Life during a discussion on ways to make money legally while traveling. She spent a significant part of her life hitchhiking America and, for a brief time, she, myself and two others lived on a school bus. Those adventures ended when she got married, had twins and was forced to become an adult. But her desire to travel has never waned. But how does a single mother of twins support a family on the road?

“Donuts,” she suggested.

It was a brilliant idea, and I ran with it. Having food vending and restaurant experience, and having learned the inner-workings of festivals from my travels last summer with the carnival, I figured I’d give it a shot. I purchased the equipment, scored a recipe and my sidekick came up with a silly name. I spent much of this weekend perfecting the recipe, learning the equipment, establishing an efficient process for frying, bagging and handing off the balls. I must say, they are pretty delicious.

Now it’s almost showtime. This weekend, my sidekick and I will work the four-day Grateful Garcia Festival being held just north of Black River Falls. After that it’s off to Chicago to work the Phish shows. Then off to Denver for more Phish.

After nearly three months in Madison, my summer finally begins.
