Old Friend Hunting

Aaron Edgerton, WI – Disappearances are like this: here one moment, gone the next. So it was with Aaron, a friend since high school, who quietly absconded from Madison around 2002. No good-byes. No forwarding address. No new number. Simply gone. Poof! Just like that. All connections, severed like arties and left to bleed out. Back then, we figured the disappearance was only temporary. Aaron fell off from time-to-time, retreating to Edgerton, about 45-minutes south of Madison, where he had family. There he worked with his father, roofing houses, and patronized his aunt’s bar in the off-hours. When he tired of… Continue Reading

Futility Wins the Day in Central Tennessee

The rain I drove through on my way to Summertown, TN, this morning. Lewis County, TN – The day begins on a sour note, with torrential rain and a headache. I wake outside of a gas station 30 miles south of Nashville to the sound of sweeping gushes of rain pitter-pattering against Purple Thunder’s windows. Due in Summertown a few hours from then for a tour of The Farm, an eco-community established in the 1970s, it doesn’t appear any outdoor excursions are in the forecast. Just ask Gerald Heckathorn, who, in the early-1980s, went on an 18-month cross-country bank-robbing spree in his prized white Cadillac El Dorado. “I went everywhere, man” he recalls. “I was living large.” That is, until the FBI zeroed in on him. Gerald was an unlikely criminal. Born to bohemian parents in the San Francisco Bay area, he rebelled as a teenager by going to war in Vietnam. Less than three weeks after arriving in Saigon, a Viet Cong… Continue Reading

Comp Time with Davin Jael

Davin2 As a little girl, Davin Jael couldn’t wait to grow up so she could trade the tedium of rural Maine for the excitement and wonder of everywhere else. Not unhappy, but restless, Davin left home at 18, bouncing from town to town across America. She landed eventually in sunny California, until Mother Nature sent her packing. She’s been on the move ever since. “I like everything to be temporary and fluid,” explains Davin, now 27. “That feeling like I wake up on a moving island rather than being stationary, I can’t see myself ever getting tired of it.” Now,… Continue Reading
