Steve the Pig’s Crazy Adventure

Ridley Township, PA – Some stories are just plain ridiculous. On Thursday, a four-month-old Vietnamese potbellied pig named Steve managed to cut loose from his Clymer Street home, where he lived with his owner, Brian Maguire, 24, and Maguire’s girlfriend, Bernadette Broadhurst.

Early Thursday morning, Maguire realized his six-pound buddy was missing. After scouring the neighborhood in this Philadelphia suburb, he called the Delaware County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who told him that police had the baby pig.

To Maguire’s dismay, police had nothing but bad news. They informed Maguire that keeping farm animals as pets is illegal in Ridley, even though Maguire wasn’t raising Steve for food, the township’s legal definition of farm animal. So Maguire quickly found a Steve a new home.

Problem solved, right?

Well, police refused to give Steve back to Maguire, telling him they’d put Steve up for adoption.

Maguire promptly called Action 6 News. “You can’t do that! That’s my pet! I have the paperwork,” Maguire said.

Maguire was also told that Steve had been placed on a farm north of the city. When Maguire asked for the name of the farm, the officer allegedly replied, “Don’t worry about it.”

Not only were the cops holding Steve hostage, but had put him in danger by sending the city pig to live on a farm.

A mini-movement was born. Within 24 hours, the Where’s Steve? Bring Him Back Ridley Facebook group swelled to more than 2,000 fans. Where is Steve? T-shirts were made. The news spread across the wires and Internet. Local radio stations sent reporters down to Ridley to offer live updates during the morning rush. But no one – police or township officials – would comment.

By midday Maguire had threatened a lawsuit.

Late Friday night, police, without explanaton, reunited Steve and Maguire.

It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s tough to get that “perfect balance”

this. Additionally, the blog loads super quick for me on Opera.
